A Guide To Renewing Your Vehicle Registration

About Me
Making My Car Gorgeous

About a year ago, I started thinking seriously about getting rid of my existing car and investing in a new one. Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of time or money, so I decided to do what I could to make my own car exactly what I wanted it to be. I started working with a business that specialized in completely overhauling cars, and it was amazing to see what they could do. Within a few short months, my car was completely refinished, and I was really impressed with how much of a difference it made. Check out this blog for information on making over your car.

A Guide To Renewing Your Vehicle Registration

If you want to get all that you can out of your car, it's critical that you keep it in tip top shape and pass inspections, so that you can renew registration with no problem. When you fail to register your vehicle on time, you might be subject to some late registration penalties that add up over time. With this in mind, follow this guide to get the most out of your automobile registration:

#1: Learn the requirements of your state

When you want to renew your registration, the requirements are laid out by your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Some states allow you to automatically renew your registration, while others require your vehicle to pass a general inspection first. In some states, such as California, you will need to make sure that your car passes an emissions test first. This emissions test, also called a smog check, can be handled by a licensed mechanic, and you must present the smog check certificate when you register your vehicle. If your car fails the smog inspection, you'll need to fix the issue and have it rechecked before you can register your vehicle. To give your car an extra shot at passing the smog check, make sure that you drive it for about 20 minutes before getting the inspection, so that engine gets time to warm up.

#2: Find out how much the fees are

If you are looking to renew your registration, you'll need to be mindful of the costs. These fees are issued on a state by state basis. For example, the state of Virginia charges a base registration fee of about $41. Your fees will go up if you have past due tickets, vanity plates, and other such issues. If possible, schedule an appointment at your local DMV branch in order to beat the lines.

#3: Keep your car in great condition

Finally, make sure that you do what you can to maintain the vehicle in the interim. The better you care for your car, the fewer problems you'll have passing inspection once it's time to renew registration. Sticking to simple things like scheduled oil changes can go a very low way in caring for your vehicle. An auto repair shop will be able to change your oil for between $45 and $70 or so in most cases.

Follow these three guidelines so that you can renew your vehicle registration with no problem.
